Rebuilding Body Image After Amputation

Rebuilding Body Image After AmputationAs practitioners, we often see new amputees who are having difficulty adjusting to how their body looks. Looking in the mirror for the first time and seeing limb loss is jarring, even if you have prepared yourself for it. Having a negative body image can definitely impact how well you will do with a prosthesis and as practitioners, we want you to excel to the best of your ability. So here are some signs you may be struggling with your body image.

    • Feeling overly self-conscious about your appearance.
    • Avoiding others in social or professional settings.
    • No confidence in your body’s appearance and function.
    • Feeling guilty that you had an amputation; that it’s your fault.
    • Doubting that you will ever be “you” again.

We want you to overcome those feelings and become a successful user of your prosthesis. Here are some tips that may help:

    • Consider joining a peer support group. The Amputee Coalition has a registry of over 400 groups across the country. They also offer online peer support. Visit https://www.amputee-coalition.org/support-groups-peer-support/support-group-network.
    • Self-care is important. Get regular exercise, even if it’s in small amounts. Eat healthy meals and stay hydrated. A balanced diet and plenty of water can improve your energy and focus. Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Stick to a schedule and reduce the blue light on devices you may have in your bedroom.
    • Practice gratitude. Remind yourself daily of things you are grateful for.
    • Stay positive. Replace negative images with positive ones. A positive outlook is just as important as any assistive or mobility device.
    • Still feeling overwhelmed? Don’t be afraid to reach out. Arrange to see a mental health care provider or call a national mental health hotline.

    Remember, you are not alone.
